DRY EYE DISEASE MANAGEMENT

What is Dry Eye Disease?

Dry Eye Disease occurs when the eyes fail to produce enough tears or the tears produced are of poor quality.

Causes of Dry Eye:

  • Dry air, excessive screen time

  • Certain medications

  • Certain autoimmune diseases

  • Contact lenses

It not treated in a timely manner, Dry Eye Disease can lead to more serious eye conditions, such as infection and impaired vision. Symptoms are often worse at end of the day.

Common symptoms:

  • Gritty feeling on the eye

  • Itchy eyes

  • Tired eyes

  • Excessive tear production

  • Stinging/burning sensation

  • Red eyes/eyelids

  • Blurred vision/light sensitivity

  • Flaking/other debris on the eyelashes/eyelids

  • Sore and swollen eyelids

Are artificial tears the only treatment for dry eye?

Artificial tears are moisturising eye drops used throughout the day for temporary relief of moderate dry eye symptoms. Though effective, they are not the only treatment available. The first step of dry eye treatment should be an eye exam in order to identify the root cause. Only then can a tailored treatment plan be developed for the best possible results. Depending on the severity of dry eye, there are several other treatments that can achieve longer-lasting dry eye relief.
