CONTACT LENS EXAMINATIONS

Contact lenses are a comfortable and effective solution for correcting vision. Most eyeglass prescriptions (unique prescriptions included) can be used to fit contact lenses.

According to Ontario regulations, contact lenses are considered medical devices and therefore require a specialized prescription from an eye health professional. This is because contact lenses carry the risk of eye infection or inflammation that can result in vision loss if left untreated. Annual contact lens examinations are necessary to monitor eye health.

WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR MY FIRST CONTACT LENS PRESCRIPTION?

Step 1 – Comprehensive Eye Exam

A comprehensive eye exam is required before fitting contact lenses. The exam is specifically tailored to determine your contact lens prescription and includes tests not found in routine eye exams.

Overall eye health, including the front surface of the eye (cornea, conjunctiva, eyelids etc.) is carefully assessed for potential conditions that could affect the patient’s ability to comfortably and safely wear contact lenses.

 Step 2: Contact Lens Fitting

To find the contact lens that is right for you, a list of factors must be considered. Dr Chiu will host a detailed discussion of your lifestyle, including brand preferences, materials, and disposal schedule, and measurements of eye curvature and prescription.

Ill-fitting contact lenses can cause discomfort, reduced vision and eye conditions such as dry eye.

A contact lens fitting assesses the shape and size of the eye and ensures that the contact lens is centered correctly and moves appropriately.

Step 3: Contact Lens Insertion, Removal Training and Hygiene

Dr Chiu will inform you of contact lens care and maintenance methods, which are key practices for reducing risk of eye infection, and in-person training will be provided on safe contact lens insertion and removal for first-time patients.

IF YOU EXPERIENCE IRRITATION OR PAIN IN YOUR EYES, REMOVE YOUR CONTACT LENSES IMMEDIATELY AND CONTACT US TO BOOK AN ASSESSMENT.
